Compress an image to a size in KB

Set the limit your portal asks for, drop the image, and download a JPG that fits. Nothing is uploaded.

How the compression works

A JPG gets smaller in two ways: lower quality (stronger compression of fine detail) or fewer pixels. We try quality first, in small steps, because it keeps the picture the same size. Only if the lowest sensible quality still doesn't fit do we reduce the resolution.

Each step is checked against your limit, and the final file is measured again before you see it, so the size shown next to Download is the real size of the file you get.

Choosing the right limit

Use the exact number from your application's notification. Portals count KB strictly: a 51 KB file is rejected when the limit is 50 KB. If the notice gives a range, like 20–50 KB, set both the minimum and the maximum.

If you're preparing documents for a specific exam, use its page instead. It already knows every limit, including pixel sizes and DPI, and checks all of them.

Tips for a clear result

Start from a sharp, well-lit original. Crop away empty space first if you can: fewer pixels of background leave more of the limit for your face or signature.

FAQ

Does compressing change the dimensions of my image?

Only when it has to. We lower the quality first and keep the original width and height. If that isn't enough to fit the limit, the image is scaled down too, and the new size is shown in the checks.

Can I compress a PNG?

Yes. The result is a JPG, because JPG compresses photos and scans far better than PNG. Transparent areas become white.
