Frequently asked questions

About preparing photos, signatures and certificates for application portals with ExamUpload. For a specific exam, its page has questions about that exam's own rules.

Are my photos and documents uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing, compressing and checking happen inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Your files are never uploaded to us or stored anywhere, and they're gone when you close the tab.

Where do the size requirements come from?

From each body's official notification, information bulletin or portal instructions. Every requirement links to its source and shows the date we last checked it. Rules can change between cycles, so always glance at the latest notification before you apply.

My exam captures the photo live. What do I need to prepare?

Several portals now take your photo through the webcam or phone camera during the application. There's no file to prepare for that step, so we show you how to pass it instead: light, background, what not to wear. Signatures, thumb impressions, declarations and certificates still need uploads.

What if my signature comes out below the minimum file size?

Small, clean signatures often compress below a portal's minimum. We first raise the quality and size within the allowed limits. If it's still too small, we add standard metadata to the file to reach the minimum. The picture itself doesn't change, and we tell you when we've done it.

Can I turn certificates into a PDF of the right size?

Yes. Drop a PDF, or one or more phone photos of the pages, onto a certificate card. We combine them into one A4 PDF and compress it into the allowed size range. If the PDF has selectable text, we ask before turning its pages into images.

What does “general preset” mean?

Some portals publish only a file size, or no numbers at all. For those, we use sensible defaults (for example, a photo no larger than 800 pixels on its longest side) and label them “general preset” so you know they aren't an official rule.

Is it free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you prepare.

Which browsers and phones does it work on?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Android phones, iPhones and computers. If your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, share the photo as JPG or set Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

Why does the portal say my file is too big when it looks small?

Portals check the file size in KB, not how big the picture looks. A phone photo is usually 2–5 MB, which is 2,000–5,000 KB, so it has to be compressed before almost any portal accepts it.

What is DPI, and do I need to change it?

DPI (dots per inch) tells software how large to print an image. Some portals ask for a minimum DPI. When a requirement lists one, we write it into the image file for you, so you don't need another tool.

Can I use the same photo for several applications?

Usually not as-is. Each portal has its own size, dimensions and file-size window, so prepare the photo separately on each application's page. It takes a few seconds each time.

The result looks blurry when I zoom in. Is that a problem?

Portals ask for small images, often a few hundred pixels wide, so they look soft when zoomed. What matters is that your face or signature is clear at normal size. Start from a sharp, well-lit original for the best result.

My photo was taken against a coloured wall. Can you make the background white?

Not yet. When a portal asks for a white background, we warn you if the edges of your photo don't look white. Retake the photo against a plain white wall in good, even light.

Do you keep a copy of my files?

No. We have no server that receives your files. They exist only in your browser's memory while the page is open.
